Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the preantral follicles in the ovaries of rabbits from the New Zealand breed. For this purpose eight adult female rabbits were stay under unified rearing and feeding conditions during the 45 days. Their ovaries were embedded in paraffin to obtain serial sections for light microscopy and developed by standard histological methods. The following parameters on 61 preantral follicles were examined: diameter (μm) of the follicles, oocytes, thickness of granulose cell layer and density of follicles distribution per μm2 by classes. The results showed that the size of the PAF in the investigated rabbits breed varies between 53 to 205 μm in dependence of number of granulose cells layers and oocytes- between 34 to 83 μm. The diameter of the follicles and the thickness of granulose cell layers gradually increased from Ist to IVth class (P < 0.001), but the diameter of oocytes - from Ist to IIIth class only. At the stage of early antral follicle it was observed a tendency to decrease the intensity of oocyte growth and three folder increase of the granulose cells thickness (P < 0.001). The density of the early preantral follicles per μm2 was lower (P < 0.001) than density of each other follicular classes. It was established linear regressive relationship between the density of follicles distribution per μm2 by classes and follicular diameter. The biggest was the population of the preantral follicles from the class I possessed the smallest diameter. About 20% only of the preantral follicles from class I in rabbits of New Zealand breed reach the stage of early antral follicle (class IV).
