Dairy cattle situation and challenges

Abstract: Dairy cattle breeding is a major sub-branch of agriculture both in the world and in our country. The aim of this study is to analyze the tendencies in the development of dairy farming in Bulgaria and worldwide. Dairy cattle breeding in a global scale is in a process of consolidation, modernization and increase in the average milk yield. In Bulgaria the number of dairy farms with 1 to 9 dairy cows’ decreases, while the number of farms with more than 15 animals increases and the average milk yield rises. Although the process of consolidation and modernization and the increase in average milk yield, the quantity of produced cow milk and the number of dairy animals in Bulgaria gradually reduce.
