Nikolay Todorov, Lazar Kozelov, Mariana Petkova
Abstract: The paper presents a review of research on the feeding of ruminants in Bulgaria. During the last years in our country there have been four projects on these problems, which are not aimed at solving major problems of animal husbandry practice. None of our three faculties of agriculture conduct research with ruminants. In the period 1990 - 2000 there were 43 to 48 scientists in field of animal nutrition compared to 26 in 2010. During this period the number of ruminant nutritionists decreased from 31 to 11-16. It is considered appropriate that the few scientists and research funds focus on several key issues to be developed in a cooperation of different research institutions and result are implemented in commercial farms. It is important to combine the efforts of scientists from different institutions, and to utilize better public-private partnerships with the feed industry and large farms. It is propose project “Development and implementation of a system for rapid increases in productivity and economic efficiency of dairy farming” to be financed with BGN 450,000 for a period of two years, including model applying in 4 commercial farms. The wide implementation to be done by specialists of NAAS, private advisory agencies and producers organizations, in cooperation with scientists. It was pointed out scientific impact and new feed products for adopting of feed industry. It was described the key actions that will allow to increase milk production and to improve economic and competitiveness of dairy farms.
